What is the meaning of the saying, “you can't outgive God”?

“You can’t outgive God” is a common phrase among Christians. It means that God has given His people infinitely more than they could ever give to Him. God created the universe, breathed life into human beings, and sent His Son Jesus to the earth. Jesus took the punishment for humanity’s sins by dying on the cross and rising again three days later (Romans 4:25). Christians should respond by supporting their churches financially, sharing the gospel, and discipling younger believers. Nobody, however, can give God more than He has given them.

Romans 11:35 reads, “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” Thus, Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, taught that God has given His people infinitely more than they could ever give Him. God’s first gift to humanity was life itself. Genesis 1—2 record how God created the universe. Genesis 1:27 describes His special creation of humanity in His own image. God gave human beings rational minds with the ability to create and to make moral choices. Yet, in Genesis 3, the first human beings rebelled against Him and brought sin and death into the world.

Despite humanity’s sin, God continued to show mercy. He revealed Himself to Abraham and later to Moses (Genesis 15; Exodus 3). Through Abraham’s descendants, God formed the nation of Israel. He gave Israel the law, revealing His standards for righteous living (Exodus 20). God also promised that a future ruler and deliverer would come from Israel (Genesis 49:10; Micah 5:2).

Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth and fulfilled God’s promises of a Savior. The four Gospels record His life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection. Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for the sins of human beings. All human beings have a sinful nature as a result of Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God. Jesus’ death and resurrection, however, provided a way of salvation for all who believe in Jesus and trust in His saving work (Romans 10:9–10).

Human beings owe every breath in their lungs to God’s mercy and love. Every sunset and star in the galaxy testifies to God’s goodness and creative power (Psalm 19:1–4). Jesus Himself died for the sins of humanity and rose again to show His power over death. God has given incredible gifts to human beings. Christians, who believe in Jesus’ promise of salvation, should respond by volunteering at church, discipling other Christians, reading the Bible often, and financially supporting the work of pastors and missionaries. Nevertheless, no person can give more than what God has given to them.

Some pastors use the phrase, “you can’t outgive God,” when asking for money at the offering or another time. The implication is that God will give His people more money later than they give to the church now. Some Christians have given money to the church and soon received job promotions or an unexpected financial gift. They point to Malachi 3:10, where God promised blessings to those who gave their full tithe as prescribed in the law. This teaching can be misleading. In the Old Testament, God promised blessings to the entire nation of Israel when they followed His commandments, not necessarily financial gifts to people when they tithed.

The New Testament commends people to give generously with a good attitude (Luke 21:1–4, 2 Corinthians 9:7). Jesus promised eternal life to those who believed in Him. He told His followers that they would experience trouble in the world and not necessarily wealth (John 16:33). Therefore, “you can’t outgive God” means that God has given His people life, love, and salvation. These blessings are far more than anything human beings can give to God. The phrase is not a promise of future financial success if people give to the church. Christians should support and serve the church out of gratitude for God’s goodness and indescribable gifts, not from an expectation of financial benefit.
