Will Christians be judged?

True Christians—born-again children of God—will be judged by God, but not in the same way or at the same time as unbelievers.

There is an inescapable judgment to come: “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). But God makes a distinction between His children and those who reject His Son. The patriarch Abraham understood God’s nature in this regard and expressed his faith in conversing with the Lord: “Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:25).

Christians will “all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10; cf. Romans 14:10), where they will give an account of themselves to God. After the rapture of the church, at the judgment seat of Christ, believers will “receive what is due . . . for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10; cf. Luke 19:11–26).

Unbelievers will not appear before the judgment seat of Christ; their judgment is called the great white throne judgment, a final reckoning at the end of time prior to their being cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11–15).

Neither the judgment seat of Christ nor the great white throne judgment will determine anyone’s salvation. That matter was already settled while people were alive on earth. At the time of death, a person’s fate is sealed. The judgment a person faces depends on his or her standing in relation to Christ.

Believers appearing before the judgment seat of Christ have already been forgiven of their sin, by grace through faith in Christ (John 3:16). “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). The judgment seat of Christ will be a time of examination and a time of reward. Jesus will inspect the works we did in His name. If we were faithful in service, yielded to the Spirit, and seeking Christ’s honor, we will have reward (see Matthew 10:41–42). If we neglected our opportunities to serve the Lord, we will suffer loss of reward (see 1 Corinthians 3:10–15).

Christians will be “judged” by a different standard than the world, namely, “by the law that gives freedom” (James 2:12). God will not judge those who trust in Christ under the absolute standards of the Old Testament Law; instead, He will judge them by the standard of the law of liberty, or the law that gives freedom.

Christians experience the discipline of God in this life, and that can be considered a type of “judgment,” as well. But it is a judgment that separates them from the unbelieving world: “When we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world” (1 Corinthians 11:32). The wrath of God is coming, and God’s loving discipline now keeps His children from experiencing condemnation then.

Unbelievers will appear before the great white throne where they will be “judged according to what they had done” (Revelation 20:13). They will have the divine sentence passed upon their “worthless deeds of evil and darkness” (Ephesians 5:11, NLT). The result will be they are “thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).

Christians rest in Christ’s promise that their sins are forgiven and they will never face a final judgment of condemnation: “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24).
