Answer
The theme of John 5:18–30 is the unity and equality of God the Father and Jesus Christ, His Son. In this passage, Jesus explains that He has the same power and authority as the Father, including the power to give life. Eternal life comes through Jesus (John 3:16); there is no other way of salvation (John 14:6). Jesus presents the same teaching in John 5:24: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life” (ESV).
Eternal life is the outcome for those who listen to Christ’s words and believe in God the Father who sent Jesus. God will not condemn those who hear and believe when the time of judgment comes because they have already “crossed over” (NIV) from death into life. The wording of John 5:24 suggests a present-tense reality and a future promise. This means that the outcome begins immediately upon belief but continues into eternity.
The criterion for receiving eternal life involves both hearing and believing. One must truly hear Jesus’ word—not simply listen passively but accept His word as truth and submit to His teaching (John 10:27; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; James 1:22–25). His word gives life to spiritually dead sinners (John 6:63; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 1:23).
Likewise, one must believe in the One who sent Jesus, since rejecting Jesus amounts to rejecting His Father (John 5:23; 15:23). Jesus said, “No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also” (1 John 2:23).
The outcome of hearing and believing is salvation, here and now, and for all eternity. Saving faith requires recognizing Jesus as the Son of God and fully committing to Him. This involves accepting His words and making them the foundation of one’s life. Whoever does this receives eternal life as a present spiritual reality (1 John 5:11–13; John 6:47; 17:3). No one can snatch that person away from Jesus and the eternal life He gives (John 10:28). The moment we place our faith in Christ, our life is hidden in Him, which means that believers are eternally secure (Colossians 3:3–4; John 10:28). At this point, we become a new creation; our old life is gone, and our new life has begun (2 Corinthians 5:17). When Jesus is in us, and we are in Him, we possess life forever through our vital union with Him.
Another outcome for whoever hears Christ’s word and believes is no condemnation for sin. The apostle Paul writes, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death” (Romans 8:1–2, NLT).
No condemnation is a present reality and a future certainty. In a similar teaching about eternal life (John 3:16–21), John states, “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son” (John 3:18, NLT). Because of God’s great mercy and love, we do not have to live in fear of His punishment or judgment, not now or on the future day of judgment (1 John 4:17–18). Paul eloquently explained, “Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us” (Romans 8:33–34, NLT).
Jesus gives His divine life to all who trust in Him. Right now, we live in a fallen world, but our eyes are fixed on Jesus and the hope of resurrection life (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; 1 Corinthians 15:1–58; Hebrews 12:2). The outcome of hearing Jesus’ word and believing in God the Father is future glory (Romans 8:23; 2 Corinthians 3:18). One day, when Christ returns, “He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control” (Philippians 3:20–21, NLT). Death holds no power over us, and we will live in the light of His glorious presence forever (Revelation 20:6; Revelation 22:5).
