Answer
In John 3:34, the apostle John writes, “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure” (NKJV). That is, God the Father gives the Spirit to Jesus “without measure” (ESV) or “without limit” (NIV). The one “whom God has sent” is Jesus Christ.
Jesus is greater than John the Baptist, who is the focus of John 3:22–30. Jesus is greater than John the Baptist for these reasons:
• Jesus “comes from above” (John 3:31)
• Jesus “testifies to what he has seen and heard” in heaven (John 3:32)
• Jesus “speaks the words of God” (John 3:34)
• Jesus has received “all things into his hand” (John 3:35, ESV)
• Jesus grants eternal life to whoever believes in Him (John 3:36).
Jesus’ earthly ministry is enabled by the Father, who “gives the [Son] the Spirit without measure” (John 3:34, ESV).• Jesus “testifies to what he has seen and heard” in heaven (John 3:32)
• Jesus “speaks the words of God” (John 3:34)
• Jesus has received “all things into his hand” (John 3:35, ESV)
• Jesus grants eternal life to whoever believes in Him (John 3:36).
Jesus “is greater than anyone else” (John 3:31, NLT); He is greater than John the Baptist and, by extension, all other prophets. John the Baptist “came only as a witness to the light” (John 1:8). This is why John said, “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him” (John 3:28).
Unlike the Old Testament prophets, who received the Holy Spirit in some measure, Jesus received the Holy Spirit “without limit” (John 3:34). So, the OT prophets were temporarily empowered by the Holy Spirit to complete a specific task. In contrast, Jesus, the Son of Man, always possessed the Spirit in full. He was perpetually, perfectly filled with the Spirit and was completely yielded to Him. Jesus was thus the perfect spokesperson for God.
The unlimited endowment of the Spirit upon Jesus explains the kind of ministry He had. Jesus, the obedient Son of God, always spoke and acted in accordance with the Father’s will: “He who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him” (John 8:29, ESV). Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God, the Word made flesh (John 1:1, 14; 14:9). Jesus’ words and actions were direct expressions of God’s character and will (Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:3).
John’s statement that God “gives the Spirit without measure” (John 3:34, ESV) affirms the unique sonship of Christ, aligning with the messianic prophecies found in Isaiah 11:2; 42:1; and 61:1. So, when John the Baptist saw the Spirit descend upon and remain on Jesus (John 1:32–33), he knew that Jesus was the promised Messiah.
