Question

What does it mean that every man should have his own wife (1 Corinthians 7:2)?

every man should have his own wife
Answer

In 1 Corinthians 7:1–40, the apostle Paul offers guidance on marriage, singleness, and sexual morality. The believers in Corinth had asked Paul about celibacy and whether Christians should abstain from sexual relations altogether (1 Corinthians 7:1). Paul responds, “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband” (1 Corinthians 7:2, KJV).

The question behind 1 Corinthians 7:1–2 is whether remaining unmarried is better or more spiritually mature than getting married. Jesus taught that certain people have a special calling to remain unmarried (Matthew 19:10–12). Paul likewise recognized that singleness is a gift from God, but not everyone has that gift (1 Corinthians 7:7).

The Bible teaches that God ordained marriage as a blessing to humanity. When God created Adam, He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). The Lord instituted marriage as an intimate, sacred union between one man and one woman. In marriage, husband and wife become “one flesh” and enter a lifelong union (Genesis 2:23–24; Matthew 19:4–6; Ephesians 5:31).

Marriage serves several God-given purposes, and one of them is to provide the proper setting for sexual intimacy. By saying, “let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband,” Paul emphasizes that sexual relations belong within marriage. In a culture filled with sexual immorality, Christians are to remain faithful to their spouses rather than seek sexual fulfillment outside marriage.

In the context of 1 Corinthians 7:2, Paul is addressing the sexual relationship between husbands and wives. This becomes clearer in verses 3–5, where Paul tells husbands and wives to fulfill their marital duty to one another. Neither spouse should deprive the other except by mutual consent and for a limited time devoted to prayer. Afterward, they should “come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control” (1 Corinthians 7:5). Therefore, Paul teaches married believers not to treat sexual intimacy as sinful or spiritually inferior. Within marriage, it is part of God’s wise design.

Every man should have his own wife also conveys the importance of marital exclusivity and faithfulness. The words “his own wife” and “her own husband” point to a relationship between one husband and one wife. Sexual intimacy finds its proper expression within that exclusive marriage covenant, not in adultery, fornication, or other sexual relationships outside marriage.

Paul is not commanding every man and woman to marry. He himself lived as an unmarried man when he wrote to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 7:7–8). For those who have the gift of singleness, singleness provides unique opportunities to serve the Lord without the responsibilities of marriage (verses 32–35). However, for those who do not have that gift and cannot exercise sexual self-control, marriage provides the God-ordained context for sexual desire. As Paul says, “if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion” (verse 9).

Every man should have his own wife therefore speaks to faithfulness within marriage and sexual purity for every believer. Marriage is a sacred union in which husband and wife give themselves exclusively to one another. Singleness does not make someone more spiritual, nor does marriage make someone less devoted to God. Whether married or single, God calls every Christian man and woman to honor Him with their bodies, resist sexual immorality, and live according to His holy design.
