Question

Do we become angels after we die?

translate GQkidz become angels audio
Answer

Angels are spirit beings created by God (Colossians 1:15–17) and are entirely different from humans. They are God’s special agents to carry out His plan and to minister to the followers of Christ (Hebrews 1:13–14). There is no indication that angels were formerly humans or anything else—they were created as angels.

One difference between angels and humans is that angels have no need of, and cannot experience, the redemption that Christ offers the human race. First Peter 1:12 says the angels “long to look into” the things concerning salvation—had they formerly been humans, angels would not find salvation mysterious. Angels are curious about God’s plan, and they rejoice whenever a sinner turns to Christ (Luke 15:10), but forgiveness of sin and the gift of salvation are not part of their personal experience.

When a believer dies, his or her spirit goes to be with Christ (2 Corinthians 5:8) to be reunited with the body at the resurrection (1 Thessalonians 4:16). The believer does not become an angel in heaven. When Elijah and Moses appeared on the Mount of Transfiguration, they had not transformed into angels; they appeared as themselves—although glorified—and were recognizable to Peter, James, and John (Matthew 17:1–3).

One passage that some people misconstrue to mean we become angels when we die is Matthew 22:30. Jesus, in answering a question from the Sadducees, said, “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” But Jesus was not teaching that we become angels, only that we will be like the angels in one respect: we will not marry in the eternal state. Angels do not marry, and, after the resurrection, neither will we.

God redeems us body, soul, and spirit, and we will live with the Lord forever. He made us human, and we will remain human throughout eternity. Angels remain angels. All serve and worship God our Creator, saying, “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” (Revelation 7:12).
