Question

What does he has set his love upon Me mean (Psalm 91:14)?

He has set His love upon me
Answer

Psalm 91 reaches a climax in verses 14–16, when the voice shifts from the psalmist to God Himself. Throughout most of the psalm, the writer describes the safety and refuge found in the Lord. But in verse 14, God begins to speak directly, confirming and expanding the promises the psalmist has been celebrating. The Lord gives His personal assurance, declaring that He will rescue and protect the person who loves and honors Him: “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name” (Psalm 91:14, NKJV).

The phrase he has set his love upon Me carries deep meaning. The underlying Hebrew verb (ḥāšaq) conveys an intense, passionate attachment—a clinging, cleaving love characterized by devotion, yearning, and delight. It is not casual affection or intellectual agreement. Instead, it describes a total reorientation of one’s deepest desires toward God. It is the kind of love that changes a person’s priorities and life direction. In other words, the believer does not simply acknowledge God; he attaches himself to God and seeks after Him with wholehearted devotion.

In Deuteronomy 7:7 and 10:15, the same Hebrew verb expresses God’s covenantal love for His people: “The Lord set his affection on you.” Only in Psalm 91:14 is it used to describe a person’s intense allegiance to God. Here, it reflects God’s command to “love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5).

To set one’s love on God is to embrace a relationship that is both interactive and personal. The psalmist knows God not as an abstract idea but as the living Lord who reveals Himself, His character, and His faithfulness. The phrase “because he has known My name” accentuates the personal nature of the relationship. In Scripture, knowing God’s name means knowing who He is—that He is merciful, just, all-powerful, and forever loyal. Jeremiah 9:24 echoes this truth, urging believers to boast only in understanding and knowing the Lord. Those who know God’s name know His character and therefore put their trust in Him (Psalm 9:10).

Psalm 91:14–16 illustrates the reciprocal nature of the fellowship between God and those who love Him. Because the believer has set his love upon God, God responds with deliverance, protection, and constant fellowship. Loyalty in love becomes the basis for claiming the psalm’s promises. God says, “I will deliver him,” meaning He will rescue, save, and free the person devoted to Him. This deliverance includes salvation from sin and freedom from guilt and its enslaving power, as expressed in passages such as Psalm 34:17–18 and Romans 6:22.

God also promises, “I will set him on high.” This imagery conveys safety and exaltation. To be set on high is to be lifted above danger and fear. It reflects how God raises His people out of trouble and places them in a secure position. David affirms, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety” (Psalm 18:2, NLT; see also Psalm 40:2). Wisdom echoes, “The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe” (Proverbs 18:10).

For the one who sets his love upon God, the promises continue. God assures His abiding presence in trouble, His answers to prayer, and His gift of long life. Fellowship with God becomes the believer’s source of guidance, strength, help, and victory. The one who loves God does not walk alone; God Himself walks with him (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8; Psalm 23:4; 46:1; 2 Corinthians 6:16; John 14:16–18; Hebrews 13:5).

Psalm 91:14 reveals that God’s promises are personal, relational, and rooted in the intimate bond between God and those who love Him. He has set his love upon Me is God’s recognition of our wholehearted devotion to Him. It describes an affection that transforms and reorients our entire lives toward God. Because we recognize our utter dependence on Him and on His grace and mercy, we cling to Him (Psalm 63:8). Such love moves God to respond with complete protection, provision, faithfulness, and honor.
