Answer
Temptation is the pull toward choices and influences that distance us from God and lead toward wrongdoing. The Bible addresses temptation from many angles, acknowledging its reality, explaining its source, and giving reassurance and practical guidance.
God’s Faithfulness and Our Capacity
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Temptation is a universal struggle shared by all people, yet God is faithful and guarantees that no temptation will exceed our ability to resist it. He also provides an escape route alongside the trial itself. This foundational promise presents temptation not as an impossible burden but as something manageable within God’s provision.
Hebrews 4:15–16 (NLT)
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 2:18 (NLT)
Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.
Temptation itself is not a sin; sin occurs when believers succumb to temptation. Jesus Himself experienced temptation in every way we do, yet He remained sinless. Through His example and the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, Christ enables us to endure temptation just as He did.
The Nature and Source of Temptation
James 1:13–15 (NIV)
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
God cannot be tempted by evil and tempts no one; rather, each person is tempted when drawn and enticed by their own sinful desires. When we act upon our desires, they grow into sin, and sin, when fully developed, produces death.
1 Peter 5:8–9 (NIV)
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
Matthew 4:1 (NIV)
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Ephesians 6:11 (NIV)
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
Beyond our own internal desires, the devil operates like a roaring lion prowling and scheming, looking for ways to destroy us through temptation. For this reason, we must be vigilant.
Practical Resistance
James 4:7 (NLT)
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
2 Timothy 2:22 (NLT)
Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.
God’s Word offers concrete strategies to overcome temptation: submit to God, resist the devil, flee youthful passions, pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, and peace, and stay connected with other believers. To overcome temptation, we must practice these disciplines and actively seek what is good rather than passively avoiding what is wrong.
Psalm 119:11 (NLT)
I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Meditating on God’s Word and storing it in our hearts will help protect us from temptation.
Matthew 26:41 (NLT)
Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!
Watchfulness and depending on God through prayer guard us from temptation.
Ephesians 6:12–13 (NLT)
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.
We must understand that we are in a spiritual battle. Putting on God’s spiritual armor enables us to stand strong against the devil’s schemes. As we cooperate with the Holy Spirit to change our desires and actions, we will exchange our sinful patterns for righteous ones.
Perseverance for His Promises
James 1:12 (NLT)
God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
Revelation 2:10 (NLT)
Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you … But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.
Hebrews 10:36 (NLT)
Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.
Believers who continue steadfast under trial receive the crown of life promised to those who love God. Scripture teaches that our perseverance in the face of temptation serves a purpose: not to avoid failure, but to gain spiritual maturity.
